How to win Diabetes

The last time I checked my weight. I was surprised. I have lost 6kg. I think this is because I have eliminated sugar from my food since this year. I run away from Coca-Cola, table sugar etc. My abdomen is flatter.

Apart form the weight my main concern was to reduce blood sugar. Consistent high blood sugar can cause Diabetes.

I am not talking of Diabetes Insipidus.

The word diabetes was first recorded in 1425, and in 1675, the Greek word mellitus, meaning “like honey,” was added, to reflect the sweet smell and taste of the patient’s urine.

The term diabetes mellitus comes from the Greek word “diabetes” (to siphon or pass through) and the Latin word “mellitus” (honey).

According to the World Health Organization Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.

In ancient India, people used ants to test for diabetes by presenting urine to them. If the ants came to the urine, this was a sign that it contained high sugar levels. They called the condition madhumeha… I hope my Indian friends will forgive my pronounciation… meaning honey urine.

Glucose testing has now progressed to the point where blood sugar can be determined by a sensor that can measure it through the skin, with no need to take a drop of blood.

Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with:

  1. DIET

This needs no introduction. It is by far the most important treatment.

I have lost 30kg since march this year a patient told me. All I did was to change my diet to more vegetable and apple.

Many diseases are from troubled mind. Cure the mind and cure the disease. Are you stressed? I say that there are 2 types of stress…. one that gives positive experience like in delayed gratification and another that gives negative experience. Take a break. Watch Assisted meditation on YouTube.

We talked about how to stop/start a habit in the this video

2. EXERCISE

Do 50 pressups when you wake up. Alternatively jump!!! Yes you can do it. Drop your car 20mins from home and walk.

Go shopping, remember to throw away the dustbin on your way. I have a friend that gives clasess on Zoom. Why dont you join him? Go and wash your car, your house plates etc.

See Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. Also check for Pilates. My wife loves this one.

Learn how to dance. Dance everyday.

Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:

Keep it simple stupid (K.I.S.S. Principle)

Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight;

Be physically active – doing at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control. Exercise is the oldest treatment

Eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats; and

Avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Diabetes can be managed and pre-diabetes can be stopped, if caught early and treated with relatively simple measures such as losing weight, cutting back on daily calories and staying physically active.

3. MEDICATION

The Global Diabetes Drugs Marketwas valued at 57000 million USD in 2020.

You should talk to your doctor. There are many drugs out there.

On average, people with diagnosed diabetes have medical expenditures approximately 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes.

You will save a lot of money if you follow #1 and #2. Do not listen to what people say. Remember it is your life. So start taking action now!
