WHO IS AN OB/GYN
An obstetrician/gynaecologist (OB/GYN) is a physician specialist who provides medical/surgical care to women and have particular expertise in pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system. This includes preventative care, prenatal care, detection of sexually transmitted diseases, Pap test screening, family planning and everything about women health.
WHAT THEY DO
Most obstetrician/gynaecologist see a variety of medical conditions in the office, perform surgery, and manage labour and delivery. Office practice consists of providing women with preventive examinations and other primary care and identifying gynaecologic problems. OB/GYNs typically evaluate infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding, leiomyoma, pelvic masses, pelvic organ prolapse, abnormal Pap smears, pelvic pain, endometriosis, breast disorders, and urinary incontinence.
- Minor office procedures include colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, Pap smears, and vulvar biopsy. Office ultrasound is performed for both obstetrics and for gynaecologic conditions. Some generalists provide considerable primary care in addition to the typical gynaecologic procedures.
- Outpatient procedures include laser surgery, diagnostic laparoscopy, operative laparoscopy such as laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, tubal ligation, diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy, and endometrial ablation.
- Inpatient surgical procedures include hysterectomies performed vaginally, abdominally, and laparoscopically. Other examples of inpatient procedures include abdominal or laparoscopic myomectomies.
- Obstetrical procedures include cervical cerclage, dilation and curettage, amniocentesis, Caesarean section, circumcision, and forceps and vacuum deliveries.
Every woman should have an obstetrician/gynaecologist she trusts, an OB/GYN she calls her own. Woman should visit a gynaecologist at least once a year. Everything about the female reproductive system should be discussed with a gynaecologist. Even when you think it’s normal, just ask your gynaecologist.
